Duvet Tog Guide: Which Tog Do I Need?

Tog is a UK measure of how well a duvet traps warmth. The higher the tog, the warmer the duvet. It measures thermal resistance, not weight. A well-filled duvet can be light and still have a high tog.

Typical tog ratings by season

Tog Typical use
1 to 4.5 tog Summer, warm rooms, people who sleep hot
7.5 to 10.5 tog Spring and autumn, a good year-round middle ground
12 to 15 tog Winter, cold bedrooms, people who feel the cold

All-season duvets

An all-season duvet is two duvets that clip together, often a lighter one and a medium one (for example 4.5 + 9 = 13.5 tog). Use each separately in summer and spring/autumn and together in winter.

Choosing the right tog

  • Room temperature: a warmer, centrally heated room needs a lower tog.
  • How you sleep: if you often wake up too hot, go lower.
  • Sharing a bed: two people produce more heat, so a slightly lower tog often works.
  • Children: many parents choose lower togs for children. Follow the age guidance on the product and current safe-sleep advice. Duvets are generally not recommended for babies under 12 months.

Tog is not filling type

Tog measures warmth only. Filling (for example microfibre or hollowfibre) affects feel, weight and washability. See each product page for the actual tog and filling.
